Where to Stay in Capri: Best Hotels and Areas

Staying overnight in Capri transforms the experience. The island belongs to its guests in the evenings and early mornings - the Piazzetta is a different place at 11pm, and a swim from the rocks before 9am involves sharing the sea with local fishermen rather than tourist boats. The trade-off is cost: Capri’s hotels are among the most expensive in Italy, and the booking window for summer shrinks quickly after January.

The Three Areas

Capri town sits on the saddle between the island’s eastern and western peaks, reached by funicular from Marina Grande. It is the social and commercial centre: the Piazzetta (Piazza Umberto I), the main shopping streets, most of the better restaurants, and the majority of hotels. The atmosphere in the evenings is genuinely festive without being rowdy. Walking distance to most attractions.

Anacapri occupies the western plateau, accessible by bus from Capri town (approximately 15 minutes). Quieter, less fashionable, with lower hotel prices for equivalent comfort, and positioned closer to the Blue Grotto and Monte Solaro chairlift. If you are primarily focused on the natural sights rather than the social scene, Anacapri makes practical sense.

Marina Grande is the port - functional rather than atmospheric, but the most convenient option if you are catching early ferries or late arrivals.

Budget Hotels (approximately €120–200/night)

Hotel La Tosca, Via Birago, Capri town. A small, family-run hotel in a quiet alley 5 minutes from the Piazzetta. Simple rooms, good breakfast terrace, genuinely friendly staff, and modest prices by Capri standards (approximately €130–180 in June/September, higher in peak summer as of 2026). Book months in advance - it is the island’s best-kept affordable secret.

Hotel Loreley, Anacapri. A classic 3-star with a swimming pool and garden terrace at the lower end of the Anacapri price scale (approximately €120–160 in shoulder season as of 2026). Clean rooms, strong breakfast, easy bus access to Capri town. Does not have sea views from the rooms, but the pool terrace compensates.

Mid-Range Hotels (approximately €200–400/night)

Hotel Villa Brunella, Via Tragara, Capri town. A terraced property on the hillside between Capri town and the Faraglioni, with a pool perched over the cliff and sea views from most rooms. The walk to Via Tragara takes about 10 minutes from the Piazzetta - far enough to feel away from the crowds, close enough to be convenient. Rates approximately €250–380 in peak season as of 2026. The restaurant is well regarded.

Hotel Caesar Augustus, Anacapri. The most dramatic setting on the island: a cliffside terrace hotel at 298 metres, with an infinity pool and panoramic views of the Bay of Naples from every terrace. The hotel was converted from an aristocratic villa in the 1940s and retains period character. Rooms approximately €280–420 in July–August as of 2026. The view from the breakfast terrace alone justifies a night here.

Hotel Luna, Via Matteotti, Capri town. A large, long-established hotel on the cliff edge above the Faraglioni, with formal gardens, a seawater pool carved into the rock, and a traditional atmosphere. Rates approximately €220–360 as of 2026. Good for those who want a classic Capri hotel rather than a boutique experience.

Luxury Hotels (€400–900+/night)

Grand Hotel Quisisana, Via Camerelle, Capri town. The island’s most famous address - a grand 19th-century establishment that has hosted everyone from Sophia Loren to contemporary royalty. Two swimming pools, multiple restaurants, impeccable service, and a position at the heart of Capri town. Rates from approximately €550 in peak season as of 2026. Worth a cocktail at the bar even if not staying.

Hotel Punta Tragara, Via Tragara, Capri town. Designed by Le Corbusier and later acquired as a private home, then converted to a hotel: white modernist architecture, two pools on a cliff above the sea, and private access to the sea via an elevator down the rock face. Views of the Faraglioni directly below. Rates from approximately €450 in peak season as of 2026. One of the most beautiful hotels in Italy.

Il Capri Hotel, Via Roma, Capri town. A more contemporary take on Capri luxury - white interiors, rooftop pool, and a cool, design-focused atmosphere. Small, with excellent personal service. Rates approximately €380–600 as of 2026.

Booking Notes

July and August bookings for any of the above can require reserving 6–8 months in advance, particularly for the mid-range and budget properties which have limited rooms. May, June, September, and October are significantly more affordable and still pleasant - sea temperatures remain swimmable into late October. Most hotels quote rates per room including breakfast; dinner is generally booked separately. Check whether your hotel includes or charges for transfers from Marina Grande, which add approximately €8–15 per person for the funicular or taxi.
