Lake Garda with Kids: Gardaland, Waterparks, and Family Bases

Lake Garda is one of the most family-friendly lake destinations in Europe. The combination of Italy’s most-visited theme park (Gardaland), two further major attractions nearby (Movieland and Caneva Aquapark), calm beaches on the southeastern shore, ferry rides, and the cable car to Monte Baldo means a week-long family holiday can be fully programmed without repetition. Gardaland

Gardaland (Località Ronchi, Castelnuovo del Garda) is Italy’s largest and most-visited theme park, open since 1975. The park has grown consistently and now covers approximately 46 hectares with more than 30 attractions.

Key rides by age:

• Toddlers (under 100cm): Magic Mountain junior coaster, Camelot castle, Fantasy Kingdom
• Children (4–12): Prezzemolo’s World, Magic Mountain, Colorado Boat, Ramses the Awakening

Tickets: Online advance tickets are significantly cheaper than gate prices. As of 2026, online day tickets run approximately €37–45 for adults and approximately €32–38 for children (ages 3–12). Children under 100cm tall enter free. Multi-day tickets and combo packages with Movieland or Caneva are available and represent good value for longer stays.

Gardaland Resort Hotel (adjacent to the park) is the most convenient family accommodation - park entry is included, access is direct, and there are character breakfasts. Rooms from approximately €180/night as of 2026. Booking well in advance for summer is essential.

Getting there: Shuttle buses run from Peschiera del Garda station in high season (approximately 10 minutes). By car, Gardaland has its own motorway exit on the A4. Parking approximately €10/day as of 2026.

Movieland

Movieland Park (Via Fossalta 58, Lazise) is a film and stunt-themed park 5km from Gardaland. The emphasis is on live shows - spectacular stunt demonstrations, car chases, fire sequences, and theatrical productions - rather than classic rides. This makes it a different experience from Gardaland and genuinely interesting for children aged 6–14.

Day passes approximately €25–30 as of 2026. The park is smaller than Gardaland and can be comfortably covered in 4–5 hours, making it a good choice for a half-day. Combo tickets with Gardaland and Caneva are available.

Caneva Aquapark

Caneva Aquapark (Via Fossalta 58, Lazise, adjacent to Movieland) is one of the largest waterparks in Italy. Facilities include wave pools, family slides, speed slides, a lazy river, a dedicated children’s splash zone (Caribe Bay Junior), and a food court.

Day passes approximately €28–35 as of 2026 (reduced for children under 12 and adults over 60). The park is well-suited to ages 5 and above. For very young children, the junior section with shallow pools and spray features is calm and manageable. The park gets very busy in July and August - arriving at opening (10am) and covering the main slides before noon is the standard strategy.

Best Family Beaches

Lazise beach (Bardolino–Lazise stretch) - a gently shelving sandy and fine-shingle beach on the southeastern shore. The water is shallow for 50–100 metres, making it ideal for young children. The beach lido (approximately €12–15 for sunbed and umbrella as of 2026) is well-organised. The medieval walled town of Lazise directly behind the beach is small, safe, and car-free inside the walls.

Bardolino beach - immediately north of Lazise, similar character. The town of Bardolino is particularly known for wine; the enoteca trail along the main street is worth a stop for parents while children play on the beach.

Spiaggia di Peschiera - a small sandy beach inside the Venetian walls of Peschiera del Garda, suitable for young children. Convenient if you are based in Peschiera.

Northern lake beaches: Riva del Garda and Torbole have beaches, but the shore is primarily pebble and the water deepens relatively quickly. Better for children aged 8 and above who are confident swimmers. The bonus is the mountain scenery.

Family-Friendly Activities Beyond the Parks

Lake Garda ferry: Children usually love the ferry, and a day using the hop-on pass (approximately €34.80 as of 2026) is an adventure in itself. The route from Peschiera or Lazise northward, stopping at Garda, Torri del Benaco, Malcesine, and Limone, takes most of a day and passes some of the lake’s most impressive scenery. Monte Baldo cable car: The rotating cable car at Malcesine (approximately €22/adult, approximately €13 for children aged 5–14 as of 2026) is a highlight for most children. Cycling: The southeastern shore cycleway between Peschiera and Lazise is flat, paved, and well-suited to families with children on their own bikes or on child seats. Bike hire is available in both towns from approximately €15/day as of 2026.

Best Bases for Families

Lazise: Our top pick for families. Close to Gardaland, Movieland, and Caneva. Medieval walled centre is car-free and safe for children. Good sandy beach. Range of family hotels and apartment rentals. Peschiera del Garda: Has a train station (useful for day trips to Verona). Shuttle buses to Gardaland. Compact historic centre. Hotel Peschiera (Viale Resistenza 4) from approximately €90/night. Less beach access than Lazise.

Bardolino: A pleasant town with a good beach, quieter than Lazise. Slightly further from Gardaland but has ferry connections. Good for families who want a mix of beach and light sightseeing without the theme park environment.
