Leaning Tower of Pisa Tickets: What to Know Before You Visit

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of those rare sights that lives up to its reputation. You know the lean, you have seen the photographs, and yet the first sight of the building at the end of the lawn - white marble, eight tiers, visibly but implausibly tilted - is still striking. The question is whether to climb it, what to combine with it, and how much you will pay.

Tower ticket basics

The tower-only ticket costs approximately EUR 20 as of 2026. This gives you a timed 30-minute entry window for the climb. The booking system assigns you a specific departure time from the gate - you cannot enter before or after your slot. Once inside, there is no time limit imposed within the building itself.

Tickets are sold at the ticket office on the south side of Piazza dei Miracoli (follow the signs from the main gate), or - the better option - in advance at opapisa.it. There is a small booking fee (approximately EUR 2) for online reservations, but it is worth it to guarantee your slot.

What the climb involves

The tower stands 55.86 metres tall on the low side, 56.7 metres on the high side. The climb involves 294 steps on a spiral staircase that curves around the exterior of each tier. The steps are made of Carrara marble and have been polished smooth by millions of visitors over eight centuries - they are genuinely slippery in wet weather. The staircase is narrow and can feel claustrophobic on busy days when climbers are ascending and descending simultaneously.

On each floor there is a doorway opening onto one of the exterior loggias (covered arcades), where you can step out and look across the piazza. The views improve with each tier. The summit (the seventh-floor belfry, beneath the bell chamber) offers a panoramic view over the Piazza dei Miracoli, the rooftops of Pisa, and on clear days as far as the Ligurian coast.

The lean is most physically evident on the upper floors - the building curves gradually as you climb, and you feel the incline in your balance as you walk around the loggia.

Children under 8 are not permitted. Children aged 8–13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Combo tickets: what is worth combining

The Piazza dei Miracoli contains four major monuments, all managed by the Opera Primaziale Pisana (OPA). You buy a combo ticket at the gate or online:

Note that Cathedral entry is free - you simply need a free ticket from the gate (available on the day). This means the combo prices effectively bundle the tower with whichever additional paid monuments you choose.

The Camposanto (monumental cemetery) and the Sinopie Museum (across the square) together take about 90 minutes. The Camposanto contains the remains of 14th-century frescoes damaged in the 1944 Allied bombing; the Sinopie Museum displays the preliminary underdrawings for those frescoes on huge panels. These two are the least-visited monuments on the piazza and some of the most interesting.

The Baptistery is worth 30 minutes. The acoustics inside are exceptional - the circular chamber is designed to sustain notes for several seconds. Guides (and sometimes overly enthusiastic visitors) regularly demonstrate the resonance.

Skip-the-line options

Booked tower slots are already timed entry, so “skip the line” in the traditional sense does not apply to the tower itself. What does save significant time is booking a guided tour of Pisa that includes direct access to a pre-purchased tower slot without you needing to queue at the ticket office for collection. These tours typically include 2–3 hours of guided commentary on the piazza and city before your assigned tower entry time.

Timing the visit

Best: 8am–9:30am. The piazza before the tour buses arrive is a genuinely different experience. The light is better for photography, the lawn is emptier, and there are no queues at the gate.

Worst: 10:30am–3pm from April to October. This is when the piazza is at maximum capacity with coach tours. The tower queue, even with a timed slot, involves a wait at the gate for ticket collection and security if you did not book online.

Low season: November to February, the piazza is quiet at nearly all hours. Tower hours shorten to roughly 10am–5pm in winter (check opapisa.it for exact seasonal schedules). Some winter days see fog or rain that adds an atmospheric quality to the marble.

On the ground: food near the piazza

There are several cafes and restaurants along Via Santa Maria (the main street leading to the piazza from Pisa Centrale) that cater to tourists - most are predictably mediocre. Better options:

Trattoria Il Campano (Via Cavalca, 19) - roughly 10 minutes’ walk from the piazza in the Borgo Stretto area. A family-run trattoria serving ribollita, trippa alla pisana, and handmade pasta. Lunch approximately EUR 15–20 per person.

Il Vecchio Dado (Lungarno Pacinotti) - on the Arno riverfront, 15 minutes from the piazza. River views, solid pappardelle with wild boar, and a reasonably priced fixed lunch menu (approximately EUR 12–14 as of 2026 including a glass of house wine).

Caffè delle Vettovaglie (Piazza delle Vettovaglie) - the main food market square a short walk from the tower. Good espresso, pastries, and a quick lunch in a non-tourist setting.

• What to bring: sturdy non-slip footwear, no high heels permitted on the tower
• Photography: permitted throughout the tower, including from the loggias
• Accessibility: the tower is not wheelchair accessible - the staircase is the only route
• Time to allow: 30–40 minutes for the climb itself, 20–30 minutes on the piazza before/after

The Leaning Tower is the gateway to a piazza that repays time. Give the Camposanto and the Baptistery proper attention after the climb - they are significantly less crowded and considerably more interesting than their billing as secondary attractions might suggest.
