Milan Design Week 2026 (Salone del Mobile)

Milan Design Week (Settimana del Design) is the world’s most important gathering of furniture, interior, and industrial designers, centred on the Salone del Mobile trade fair at Fiera Milano in Rho. In 2026 the fair runs 14—19 April. Alongside the main fair, the Fuorisalone programme transforms the entire city into an open design showcase, with hundreds of installations, exhibitions, and showroom launches across Milan’s neighbourhoods.

Salone del Mobile

The main fair takes place at the Fiera Milano exhibition complex in Rho, around 15 km north-west of Milan city centre. It is primarily a trade event — buyers, architects, and press attend by registration — but a public day ticket is available on certain days. The fair covers around 200,000 square metres of exhibition space, with zones dedicated to furniture, lighting, accessories, and the biennial kitchen and bathroom sections. Euroluce (lighting) and SaloneSatellite (emerging designers) run concurrently.

Transport to the fairgrounds: take the M1 red metro line from central Milan to Rho Fiera station (around 30 minutes from Duomo). The journey is direct and runs on an extended timetable during design week.

Fuorisalone

The Fuorisalone is free and scattered across the city. Design studios, architecture firms, fashion houses, and brands use Milan’s courtyards, warehouses, and palazzi to launch products and ideas outside the formal fair. The districts most heavily involved are:

• Brera (central Milan) — galleries, showrooms, and installations in the historic design quarter
• Tortona / Zona Tortona (south-west) — former industrial spaces taken over by installations
• Isola and Porta Garibaldi — younger brands and experimental work
• 5Vie (near the Duomo) — artisan and cultural focus

Maps of Fuorisalone events are published on fuorisalone.it each year and are available as a free app. Events run roughly 10:00 to 20:00 daily, though major launches often have ticketed evening previews.

Practical tips

Accommodation in Milan fills months ahead during design week. Book as early as possible; prices increase significantly compared to normal April rates. The city’s public transport runs at capacity, particularly on metro lines connecting to Fiera. Walking between Brera and the 5Vie district is feasible (around 20 minutes); Tortona is better reached by tram or ride-share.

Restaurants in design-heavy neighbourhoods get extremely busy for dinner reservations. Book evening meals in advance. Many venues host aperitivo events during the week — a good way to see design showrooms with a drink in hand.
