Palio di Siena - July 2026

The Palio di Siena is one of Italy’s most intensely anticipated events: a bareback horse race of approximately 90 seconds that is the culmination of months of inter-district rivalry, political manoeuvring, and civic pride. The July edition — the Palio di Provenzano, dedicated to the Madonna of Provenzano — runs on 2 July each year and has done so in an unbroken sequence (except wartime interruptions) since 1656. In 2026 it falls on a Thursday.

The contrade

Siena is divided into 17 contrade (districts), each with its own colours, animal symbol, church, museum, and fountain. Each contrada functions as a social unit and a loyalty that Sienese residents maintain for life. Only 10 of the 17 compete in any given Palio; the selection is made by lot, with the seven that did not run in the previous Palio of that edition guaranteed a place, and three additional slots drawn randomly.

The days leading up to the race — from around 29 June — involve trial races (prove) in the Piazza del Campo at fixed times each evening, the drawing of horses by lot (each contrada rides the horse it is assigned, regardless of quality), and the blessing of each horse inside its contrada’s church. The blessing, in which the priest declares “va’ e torna vincitore” (go and return victorious), is a genuine religious ceremony and not staged for tourists.

The race itself

On 2 July, the Piazza del Campo fills with around 50,000 people from mid-afternoon. Standing room in the centre of the square (the campo track’s interior) is free and unreserved, but you must enter by early afternoon and remain standing for 4+ hours in July heat. Grandstand seats around the perimeter are sold by contrade and are nearly impossible for visitors to obtain independently; some are available through licensed ticket agents at significantly marked-up prices.

The race itself begins when the mossiere (starter) drops a rope. Three laps of the piazza take approximately 75—90 seconds. Riderless horses can and do cross the finish line and count as winners. The winning contrada — horse and jockey together, or horse alone — receives the palio banner and celebrates in the streets for days.

Getting there

Siena is around 90 minutes by bus from Florence (buses leave from Santa Maria Novella bus station; trains require a change at Empoli and are slower). No trains run directly into Siena’s centre — the train station is a short bus ride below the city walls. On Palio day, roads into Siena are closed from mid-morning; public transport is the only realistic option.
