Verona Arena Opera Festival 2026

The Arena di Verona Opera Festival is one of the world’s great open-air opera experiences, staged inside a Roman amphitheatre built in the 1st century AD. The festival has run continuously since 1913 (with interruptions during the two World Wars) and in 2026 runs from 3 July to 6 September. The Arena holds up to 14,000 spectators; on a full summer night, it is among the largest regular opera audiences anywhere in the world.

The productions

Each festival season typically features four to six operas in rotating repertoire. The 2026 programme is confirmed on arena.it; historically, the season reliably includes Verdi’s Aida (the festival’s signature production since 1913, with its famous live elephants) alongside Bizet’s Carmen, Verdi’s Nabucco, and Puccini works such as Tosca or Turandot. Productions use the full depth of the Arena stage and are famous for their extraordinary scale: casts of hundreds, live horses and camels, fire effects, and period-accurate spectacle.

Performances generally begin at 21:00 (gates open around 18:30) and run approximately 3—4 hours including intervals. Most performances take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, with some midweek shows depending on the programme.

Tickets

Tickets are sold through the official Arena di Verona website (arena.it) and at the box office on Piazza Bra. Seating categories are:

• Poltrona d’oro and Poltronissima — the closest stalls seats, with the best sightlines; from approximately EUR 200 to EUR 350+
• Poltrone — numbered stalls seating further back; approximately EUR 80 to EUR 180
• Gradinata numerata — numbered stone steps; approximately EUR 30 to EUR 70
• Gradinata non numerata — unreserved stone steps at the top of the amphitheatre; from approximately EUR 27 (as of recent seasons — verify on arena.it for 2026)

The unreserved gradinata is the historic popular section; arrive early to secure a position with a clear view of the stage. Cushions can be rented or purchased at the venue — the Roman stone steps are hard and cold, even in July.

What to bring

On unreserved sections, bring a cushion or rent one at the gate. The Arena gets cold after midnight even in summer — a light jacket or layer is essential. Some productions run past 01:00. The traditional practice of lighting candles at the start of a performance has continued since the early 20th century; small candles are sold at the entrance, and the sight of 14,000 lit candles before the overture begins is genuinely remarkable.

Getting to Verona

Verona Porta Nuova station is on the main Milan-Venice and Milan-Bologna-Rome high-speed lines. The Arena is around a 20-minute walk from the station, or a short bus ride. The festival draws visitors from across northern Italy and international tourists; trains fill on weekend evenings, so booking in advance is advisable.
