Getting to the Aeolian Islands: Ferries, Hydrofoils and Booking Guide

The Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago off Sicily’s northeast coast. Seven islands - Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Panarea, Filicudi, and Alicudi - spread across 66km of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Getting there requires a boat; the question is which port, which operator, and which type of service suits your travel plan.

The Main Route: Milazzo to Lipari

Milazzo, on Sicily’s northeast tip, is the hub for Aeolian Island connections. The port runs year-round services - unlike secondary ports that operate summer-only schedules - and serves all seven islands. For first-time visitors, Milazzo should be the default departure point.

Getting to Milazzo: From Messina (50km), the A20 motorway takes approximately 40 minutes by car. From Catania (180km), take the A18 north to Messina then the A20 west - approximately 2 hours 15 minutes. From Palermo (180km), the A20 motorway runs east - approximately 2 hours.

By train: Milazzo has a railway station on the Palermo–Messina line, though the station is approximately 5km from the port (taxi or local bus to the ferry terminal). From Messina, trains take about 45 minutes; from Palermo, approximately 3 hours.

Port location: The Milazzo ferry port is at Via del Molo, in the lower town. Parking is available in the port area - approximately €4–6/day as of 2026 in the main car parks adjacent to the terminal.

Hydrofoil (Aliscafo) - Liberty Lines

The hydrofoil is the primary mode of transport for passengers without vehicles. Liberty Lines (libertylines.it) operates the most extensive hydrofoil network in the archipelago.

Milazzo to Lipari: Approximately 55 minutes. Runs multiple times daily year-round (reduced schedule October–May). Fare approximately €17–22 as of 2026.

Milazzo to Vulcano: Approximately 40 minutes (hydrofoil stops at Vulcano before Lipari on some services). Fare approximately €15–19 as of 2026.

Milazzo to Salina: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes via Lipari. Fare approximately €20–25 as of 2026.

Milazzo to Stromboli: Approximately 2 hours 15 minutes (some services stop at Panarea en route). Fare approximately €22–30 as of 2026. This is the longest standard hydrofoil journey in the regular Milazzo network.

Milazzo to Panarea: Approximately 2 hours via Vulcano, Lipari, and Salina. Fare approximately €22–28 as of 2026.

Booking: Buy online at libertylines.it, at the Milazzo ticket office (open from approximately 6am), or at agencies in the islands. For July and August travel, especially to Panarea and Stromboli (smaller islands with limited capacity), booking 2–5 days ahead is recommended. Outside peak season, tickets are generally available at the port.

Cancellations: Hydrofoil services are cancelled in rough weather - the aliscafo requires sea conditions below a certain wave height to operate safely. Check conditions before travelling, particularly in autumn and winter. Liberty Lines posts cancellations on their website and at port notice boards.

Car Ferry - Siremar

Siremar (now part of Caronte & Tourist, operating as Siremar) runs car ferry services from Milazzo to Lipari and the other islands. The ferry takes longer than the hydrofoil but carries vehicles and accommodates rough-sea conditions that cancel hydrofoil services.

Milazzo to Lipari by ferry: Approximately 2 hours. The service typically departs Milazzo once or twice daily with additional services in summer.

Vehicle costs: Car transport (standard saloon up to 4.6m) approximately €60–90 one-way as of 2026. Add approximately €25–30 per adult passenger fare.

When to use the car ferry: If you’re transporting a vehicle, obviously. Also useful in autumn and winter when hydrofoil cancellations are more frequent - ferry services operate in heavier seas. For passengers without vehicles, the extra hour journey time makes the ferry less attractive than the hydrofoil in calm conditions.

Services from Messina

Liberty Lines also operates hydrofoil connections from Messina directly to the Aeolian Islands. These are less frequent than Milazzo services and typically seasonal (summer months only), but useful for visitors starting from Messina or arriving on high-speed trains at Messina Centrale.

Messina to Lipari: Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes by hydrofoil. Check the Liberty Lines timetable for current summer schedules.

Services from Naples (Summer Only)

SNAV and Liberty Lines operate seasonal (typically June–September) overnight ferry services between Naples (Molo Beverello or Pozzuoli) and the Aeolian Islands. These are genuine overnight crossings - departure evening, arrival early morning - and include cabin accommodation on some services.

Naples to Lipari: Approximately 14–16 hours. Fares vary by cabin type - deck class (reclinable seat) from approximately €35–50 per person; shared cabin approximately €60–80; private cabin €90–140 as of 2026.

This route makes sense if your Italy itinerary starts in Naples and you want to reach the Aeolian Islands without routing through Sicily. It also avoids the train journey across Sicily, which takes 3+ hours from either Palermo or Catania.

Services from Palermo and Reggio Calabria

Liberty Lines and Siremar occasionally run services from Palermo and Reggio Calabria - frequencies and availability vary significantly by season. Check both operators’ websites for current schedules rather than relying on seasonal information that changes annually.

Inter-Island Transport

Once in the archipelago, hydrofoils connect the islands with regular services. Lipari acts as the hub - most inter-island connections route through it.

Lipari to Vulcano: 10 minutes by hydrofoil, approximately €7–9 as of 2026. Multiple daily departures. Lipari to Salina: 15–20 minutes by hydrofoil. Approximately €8–11 as of 2026. Lipari to Panarea: Approximately 45 minutes. Approximately €10–14 as of 2026. Lipari to Stromboli: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Approximately €15–20 as of 2026.

All inter-island tickets can be bought at island port offices or through Liberty Lines. In July and August, the Stromboli connection (particularly evening services returning from Stromboli after the nighttime eruption viewing) should be pre-booked.

Arriving on Lipari

Lipari’s Marina Corta and Marina Lunga are both in the centre of the main town. All services from Milazzo arrive here. The island is small enough that no additional transport is needed to reach accommodation in the town - almost everything is walking distance from the port. Scooter hire (approximately €20–30/day as of 2026) is the standard way to explore the more remote parts of Lipari.
