Bolzano Christmas Market 2026

The Bolzano Christmas Market (Christkindlmarkt) is among the oldest and most atmospheric in Italy, running from late November through early January in Piazza Walther at the heart of the city. Bolzano sits in South Tyrol, Italy’s German-speaking northern province, which means the market has a distinctly Tyrolean character — timber stalls, carved wooden decorations, and a culinary menu that owes as much to Austria as to Italy.

What to expect

Around 80 wooden stalls fill Piazza Walther and spill into the adjacent streets. Vendors sell handmade ornaments in blown glass, carved wood, and tin; woollen hats and mittens; Christmas candles and incense; and a wide selection of local food and drink. The centrepiece of the square is a large illuminated Christmas tree, traditionally erected in late November.

Food stalls serve Gluhwein (mulled red wine), Kinderpunsch (spiced hot fruit punch for children), roasted chestnuts, bratwurst and Kaiserschmarrn (a shredded sweet pancake dusted with icing sugar). Cheese stalls display speck alto adige, aged mountain cheeses, and bresaola alongside jars of local honey and apple preserves. The region’s apple orchards produce some of the best fruit in Europe, and apple strudel is ubiquitous.

The market atmosphere is most lively on weekend evenings, when the square fills and the mulled wine stalls do heavy trade. Weekday mornings are quieter and better for browsing stalls without crowds.

Getting there

Bolzano is well connected by rail. Direct trains run from Verona (around 1.5 hours), Innsbruck (around 1 hour), and Trento (around 40 minutes). From Venice, the journey is around 3 hours with a change at Verona. The main train station is a short walk from Piazza Walther. By car from Milan, Bolzano is around 3 hours via the A22 Brenner motorway.

Practical tips

The market is free to enter and open daily, typically 09:00 to 19:30 (until 21:00 on Saturdays and the days before public holidays). Exact 2026 opening hours will be confirmed by the organisers at suedtirol.info. December weekends — particularly the second and third weekends of December — are the busiest. Book accommodation early if you plan to visit on a weekend; the city’s hotels fill from mid-November onward.

South Tyrol is cold and often snowy in December. A warm waterproof jacket, good boots, and gloves are essential. The Piazza can be icy underfoot in hard frosts.
