Where to Stay in Lucca: Best Hotels Inside and Outside the Walls

Lucca is the one walled Italian city where the walls themselves are the main promenade. The 4km Renaissance circuit is wide enough to cycle, tree-lined for most of its length, and gives you aerial views into both the historic centre below and the Apuane Alps to the north. The city enclosed within is a pleasure to navigate - no cars inside most of the walls, a grid of Roman streets overlaid with medieval piazze, and some of the most characterful restaurants in western Tuscany. Hotel choice here comes down to one primary question: inside the walls or outside? Both work, but the experience is meaningfully different.

Best Areas to Stay in Lucca

Inside the Walls (Centro Storico) is the obvious choice for first-time visitors. Sleeping inside the circuit means waking up surrounded by intact Renaissance urban fabric - the streets between Piazza dell’Anfiteatro (built over a Roman amphitheatre, its oval shape preserved in the surrounding buildings) and the Duomo di San Martino are Lucca at its most characterful. Hotels inside the walls are generally smaller, often in historic buildings, and tend to cost more per square metre than equivalent-quality accommodation outside.

Near Piazza Napoleone (Piazza Grande) is the commercial heart of the walled city - the main piazza opens out towards the Palazzo Ducale, and the surrounding streets have a good mix of hotels, bars, and shops. Central, animated in the evening, and within easy reach of the train station via Porta San Pietro.

Outside the Walls (Viali di Circonvallazione area) means staying on the ring road just beyond the gates, typically a two-to-five-minute walk from the nearest entrance. Here you’ll find larger hotels with parking, more space, and often significantly lower prices than equivalent quality inside the walls. The tradeoff is losing the immersion - you walk through a gate to get to the good stuff rather than already being inside it.

Ponte a Moriano and the Serchio Valley (10–15km north) suits visitors who want a rural Tuscan base with Lucca as the nearest city. Several agriturismo properties and villa rentals operate here, typically from around €100–180 per night, and the Apuane Alps trail network is easily accessible.

Luxury Hotels in Lucca

Locanda L’Elisa sits in a 19th-century villa just outside Porta Elisa, surrounded by a garden and pool. The rooms are spacious, the antique furnishings genuine, and the sense of occasion appropriate for a special trip. Rates from approximately €200–280 per night.

Palazzo Alexander inside the walls occupies a 12th-century building with a subsequent medieval tower. Rates from approximately €180–240 per night; suites have original frescoes, and the location near San Michele in Foro is excellent.

Hotel Noblesse is a five-star boutique in the historic centre - only eight rooms, all individually styled with antique furniture and exposed brick. Rates from approximately €220–300 per night; it books out weeks in advance in summer.

Mid-Range Hotels in Lucca

Hotel Universo on Piazza del Giglio is one of Lucca’s most central hotels - facing the Teatro del Giglio, steps from Piazza Napoleone, and in operation since 1857. Rooms have been updated over the decades, resulting in a mix of styles; the better rooms are genuinely charming. Rates from approximately €100–140 per night.

Alla Dimora Lucense is a small guesthouse inside the walls near the Anfiteatro, with six rooms and a generous breakfast. Friendly, personal service and rates from around €90–125 per night. Popular with couples making a long weekend of Lucca.

Hotel Villa Romantica just outside the walls has a small garden, free parking, and rooms from approximately €95–130 per night - excellent value given the difficulty of finding parking inside the walls at any price.

Budget Hotels in Lucca

Ostello San Frediano in a converted 16th-century church near the Basilica di San Frediano is one of Italy’s most architecturally memorable hostels. Dorm beds from approximately €25 per night; private rooms from around €65. Book months ahead - it fills consistently throughout summer.

Hotel Diana near the train station (Porta Santa Maria) offers double rooms from approximately €70–95 per night. Straightforward two-star standard, friendly staff, and a location that makes train connections easy.

La Romea B&B inside the walls has a handful of rooms from around €75 per night - simple furnishings, a quiet courtyard, and the location advantage of being inside the walls at a budget-friendly price.

Getting There and Getting Around

From Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA): The most convenient option is the direct train from Pisa Centrale to Lucca (approximately 30 minutes, costing around €3.80). From the airport, a short train or taxi ride (approximately €10) reaches Pisa Centrale. The total journey from airport to Lucca station takes roughly 50–60 minutes. Taxis direct from the airport to Lucca run approximately €50–65.

From Lucca Train Station: The station sits just outside the south wall of the city, near Porta San Pietro. The walk into the historic centre takes about five minutes through the gate. Taxis are available outside the station; buses serve the outer town but are rarely necessary for central stays.

By bicycle: Lucca and cycling are synonymous. You can hire bikes for approximately €3 per hour or €12–15 per day from several shops near the main gates. The city walls circuit is the most popular ride; most streets inside the walls permit cycling except during the busiest pedestrian hours.

By car: Driving inside the walls is restricted. Paid parking is available just outside each main gate, with the largest options near Baluardo San Donato and Baluardo San Colombano. Expect to pay approximately €1.50–2 per hour.

When to Book

Summer Music Festival (Lucca Summer Festival) in July brings major international acts to Piazza Napoleone - hotel availability inside the walls can evaporate during concert weekends. Lucca Comics & Games in late October/early November is Europe’s largest comics festival and transforms the entire town; book accommodation months in advance for that period. Outside these events, Lucca is manageable year-round, and the shoulder seasons (April–May and September–October) offer Tuscany at its most serene.

Practical transport notes

Lucca’s train station is just outside the southern walls - a 10-minute walk through Porta San Pietro to the centre. For those arriving by plane, an airport transfer from Pisa or Florence airports direct to your Lucca hotel avoids taxis and public transport with luggage. Trains from Pisa take approximately 30 minutes (from approximately €4) and from Florence approximately 1.5 hours (from approximately €8). The walled city is traffic-restricted; most hotels inside the walls have no car access. If driving, use the car parks outside the walls (Parcheggio Carducci or Parcheggio Palatucci, approximately €1.50-2/hour). Bicycle hire from shops near the station costs approximately €15/day and is the best way to explore both the walls and the city.
