Pisa to Cinque Terre: Train Times, Tickets & Which Villages to Visit

The five clifftop villages of the Cinque Terre - Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare - sit on a 12-kilometre stretch of Ligurian coast north of La Spezia. From Pisa, they are roughly 90 minutes by train. It is a long day trip but a manageable one, and the combination of coloured houses stacked above the sea, the narrow harbour waterfronts, and the boat and trail connections between villages makes it worth the travel time. Cinque Terre guided tours departing from the villages are available if you want a structured introduction - boat tours between the harbours are especially popular.

Getting from Pisa to Cinque Terre: the trains

The route goes in two stages. First, Pisa to La Spezia. Then, La Spezia to your chosen village on the Cinque Terre Express.

Stage 1: Pisa Centrale → La Spezia Centrale

Trains depart Pisa Centrale from approximately 6:30am onwards. The earliest practical departure for a comfortable day trip is around 8am, putting you in La Spezia before 9:30am.

Buy your Pisa–La Spezia ticket at the Pisa Centrale ticket office or kiosks, or via the Trenitalia app. Validate at the yellow platform machines before boarding.

Stage 2: La Spezia Centrale → Cinque Terre villages

The Cinque Terre Express is a dedicated local service that runs frequently between La Spezia and all five villages, continuing to Levanto (the town immediately north of Monterosso). Journey times from La Spezia:

• Riomaggiore: approximately 10 minutes
• Manarola: approximately 14 minutes
• Corniglia: approximately 18 minutes
• Vernazza: approximately 22 minutes
• Monterosso al Mare: approximately 27 minutes

Trains run every 20–30 minutes from La Spezia during the day. The service is frequent and extremely busy in summer - expect to stand if travelling between 9am and 6pm. A single journey Cinque Terre Express ticket costs approximately EUR 5 as of 2026. The Cinque Terre Card (see below) is better value for anyone visiting more than two villages.

The Cinque Terre Card

The Cinque Terre Card (sold at La Spezia Centrale station, village ticket offices, and online at cinqueterre.eu.com) covers unlimited Cinque Terre Express journeys for the day plus, in the trail version, access to the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) coastal path between villages.

Note that trail access is sold separately because the Sentiero Azzurro is a managed national park path with visitor limits. In peak summer (July–August), trail sections between Riomaggiore and Manarola (the former Via dell’Amore, currently under restoration as of 2026) and the steeper sections near Corniglia may require advance booking. Which villages to visit

Riomaggiore - the southernmost village, closest to La Spezia, and the natural arrival point. The main lane (Via Colombo) is lined with shops and wine bars. The harbour below has a small boat launch area with local fishermen. Good for a 45-minute walk-through before moving on.

Manarola - arguably the most photogenic of the five. The viewpoint above the main lane looking down on the coloured houses stacked above the water is the classic Cinque Terre image. Smaller than Vernazza, slightly less crowded. The harbour has a swimming area on the rocks. Allow 1–1.5 hours.

Corniglia - the only village not directly on the waterfront; it sits on a promontory 100 metres above sea level and requires climbing 382 steps (the Lardarina staircase) from the station. Fewer visitors than the other four, narrow alleyways, quiet central piazza. Skip if energy is limited.

Vernazza - the most complete village: a proper harbour with boats, a piazza (Piazza Marconi) backed by a medieval watchtower, a church, and a good range of restaurants. This is the best place for lunch. More crowded than Manarola but with more to do. Allow 2 hours.

Monterosso al Mare - the largest and least “historic” of the five, but the only one with a real beach (Spiaggia di Fegina, a wide arc of coarse sand and pebbles). If you want to swim properly, Monterosso is where you stay. It is also the only village with a full hotel infrastructure. The old village (connected to the new beach area by a tunnel) has a good restaurant strip. Allow 2–3 hours if swimming.

Suggested one-day itinerary from Pisa

8:10am - Depart Pisa Centrale (Regionale Veloce to La Spezia)

9:15am - Arrive La Spezia Centrale. Buy Cinque Terre Card at the station ticket office (queue can be 20 minutes in peak season - arrive early or buy online the evening before).

9:45am - Arrive Vernazza (take the train north from La Spezia). Start at the farthest point and work back south. Explore the harbour, climb the castle tower (Doria Castle, approximately EUR 2 entry), have a coffee in Piazza Marconi.

11:30am - Train to Manarola. Walk up to the photogenic viewpoint. Swim from the harbour rocks in summer. Lunch at one of the restaurants along the main lane - Il Porticciolo (Via Birolli) is consistently rated for fresh pasta and seafood; expect approximately EUR 18–25 for a main course as of 2026.

2pm - Train to Riomaggiore. Explore the lower village and harbour. Buy a glass of local Sciacchetrà wine (a passito made from dried Bosco, Albarola, and Vermentino grapes) at one of the Enoteca on Via Colombo - approximately EUR 5–8 per glass.

3:30pm - Return to La Spezia (direct train from Riomaggiore, approximately 10 minutes).

4pm–4:30pm - Depart La Spezia for Pisa (check Trenitalia for the best afternoon connection).

5:30pm - Arrive Pisa Centrale.

One day vs overnight

A single day from Pisa covers three villages comfortably but does not leave time for the coastal hike or for swimming at Monterosso. An overnight in Vernazza or Monterosso changes the experience entirely: you have the villages in the early morning and late evening, when day visitors have left and the light on the water is at its best.

If you stay overnight:

• Vernazza is the best base for the quintessential village experience - limited accommodation options, book months ahead for peak season
• Monterosso has more hotels and the beach; better for families or if you want reliable accommodation availability

Accommodation in the villages books out entirely by March or April for July and August. If you cannot book in the villages, La Spezia is a reasonable base with easy train access.

Practical details

• Luggage: Leave bags at Pisa Centrale left luggage or your accommodation. None of the Cinque Terre villages are suitable for carrying luggage - stairs, narrow alleys, no lifts.
• Swimming: Rocky entries at most villages. Wear water shoes. Bring your own towel - beach towel rental is scarce in the villages.
• Eating: Avoid tourist-facing restaurants on the main drag at peak lunch hours (12:30–2pm). Several villages have small alimentari where you can buy local products cheaply.
• Crowds: Cinque Terre receives over two million visitors annually. If you are visiting in peak season (June–August), start early and avoid the 11am–3pm window if possible.
